< back

In accordance with our PE plan, all classes receive 1 hour physical education each week. You will find our monthly updates below. Teachers use the primary school PE curriculum (key messages - pdf) as well as the PSSI lessons plans to plan their lessons. We follow a standardised PE Timetable. Children from 1st to 6th go swimming at the beginning of the year. Junior Infants cover the PAWS programme during this time. Children from the ASD classes integrate into PE lessons and also go swimming.

Again this month we are covering the games strand. The parachute, the raquets , balls , bats and basketballs are flying out of the PE press. As well as this we have coaches in and out for basketball, tag rugby and GAA! Ger comes each week and all classes from 1st to 6th get half an hour with Ger working on football skills. Have a look at our class pictures and spot what games we are playing!

March 2018: Games
This month we are focusing on games. Ger comes each week and all classes from 1st to 6th get half an hour with Ger working on football skills. They also receive 30 minutes of PE with their class teacher. At the beginning of March Liam from the PDST came and gave us great ideas for teaching gymnastics. He taught three classes all about landing correctly! After school the teachers took part in a two hour workshop with Liam. He gave us great resources and ideas. Have a look at the pictures! There are some pictures of our lessons with Liam too! We also performed an Irish Dance each at the Ceilí mór! There was a great display of Irish Dancing.

January 2018: Gymnastics
In January we began gymnastics. This is something the whole school are doing for the next eight weeks. We are lucky to have gymnastics mats over in the hall. The active committee cleaned up our PE Press and conducted an audit. Can you tell by our faces we found lots of equipment we didn’t even know we had? Junior Infants practiced the forward roll as well as balances, Sixth class performed balances and First class can move along the bench. Ger from the GAA development is coming each Thursday. He takes pupils from 1st to 6th class. The teachers help and observe. We also get great ideas from Ger. It is important to ensure all pupils are doing the PE homework as given by their teachers each week.

December 2017: Dance
For our December activities Sixth class joined Junior Infants for a dance off. Listen to some of the songs below. And each class completed a Christmas Challenge. Our active agents out on the Junior Yard set up a small bean bag throwing competition in the shape of a Christmas tree. Our whole school walked to Huntington Castle in our Santa hats. Our active committee completed checks in each class. We came up with our New Active Slogan. All students took part in a competition, and the winner was selected! Well done Carla! We will learn this slogan in January. Members of our active committee have been completing active lines after break, we will continue this in January!

November 2017: Dance
Swimming is nearly finished. We are beginning our dance strand. We find this easier than other years because most days we drop everything and dance in our classroom anyway. Second class learned how to dance to an S Club 7 song! Lots of classes invented their own moves. Sixth class joined Junior Infants for a couple of dances. They were very kind and it proved to be a great hit with both classes!

October 2017: Aquatics
Swimming continued for First to Sixth class. Ger from the GAA development began GAA coaching for Junior Infants. They were great at listening to instructions and turn taking. Ms. O’ Brien and Ger made sure everyone could throw and catch the ball, kick the ball and even solo the ball. For Halloween we walked to Huntington Castle in our costumes. The Parents Council organised a disco.
