Active School Programme

For a number of years we have been introducing different activities that help us implement the Active School Flag Programme. The Active School Flag is awarded to schools who strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. One of its aims is to raise awareness, in the whole school community, of the need for physical activity in a healthy lifestyle.

An Active School Committee has been elected with representatives of pupils, teachers, parents and the community to ensure work is progressing.

2017-2018 School Year
This school year we are working towards getting our second active flag. We started off with the run around Europe challenge. Each class will be running a few laps each day. Junior Infants will be running to London, which is 597 km from Dublin. Older classes will be running to Amsterdam and Luxembourg. We will do this over two weeks. We hope to run to many different cities. Our active homework will also begin again soon! We will be posting more activities as the year progresses.

You can also read about the Active School activities during the 2015-2016 school year and the 2016-2017 school year.

How to achieve an Active School status
To achieve Active School status, the school must engage in self-evaluation in the areas of planning and professional development, physical activity throughout the school day and extra-curricular activities and develop partnerships with outside agencies. They must also organise an Active school Week. The school must then draw up an improvement plan which is clearly linked to the self-evaluation process findings. Targets are set and various programmes introduced. When the school feels it has met its targets, it must submit evidence of the work completed and request an accreditation visit.
