April 2018
In April we covered our favourite theme so far. We were looking at the work of farmers. We had lots of new learning about the type of work completed on farms and about foods we eat that come from farms. We were very lucky to get to go and visit a farm. We got to see lots of animals. When we came back from the farm we painted something we saw at the farm. In Aistear we made animals from playdough related to the farm. Our favourite thing to make was homes for the animals. In Maths we were exploring weight. This was an exciting topic where we weighed lots of different things in the class. We found items weighing both less and more than a kg. Senior infants had lots of fun practicing our readers. We have lots of new words. First class are very busy preparing a piece of writing for the school magazine. We are very creative and love an opportunity to do free writing. We started basketball. The skills we are learning are lots of fun. In Irish we acted out the story ‘The Enormous Turnip’.

March 2018
We welcomed spring this month. In Aistear we got to paint lovely pictures of spring animals. In another station we made a display of the lifecycle of a butterfly. This was lots of fun and made it easy for us to remember the lifecycle. We looked at Spring flowers and had a flower shop in the classroom. In Science we were looking at forces. To explain forces we all had an arm wrestle. We explored items that float and sink. To finish off our learning about floating and sinking we made boats. They were all different shapes and sizes. This linked to our learning in Maths this month which was based on 3-D shapes. 3-D shapes was an exciting topic. We explored 3-D shapes in the outdoor environment. We celebrated ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’. Each day someone was picked as ‘Gaelgeoir an Lae’. An exciting theme for us was learning all about St. Patrick. As a class we read the ‘Story of St. Patrick’. We really enjoyed sharing our past experiences about going to the parade. We had a Céili and performed the ‘Haka’ for the school.

February 2018
February was a very quick enjoyable month for us. We started off the month celebrating St. Brigid’s Day. We explored what rushes feel like and tried to make our own St. Brigid’s crosses. We concentrated a lot on this and gave it our best effort. In Science we experimented focusing on static electricity. This was great fun. We focused a lot on the theme of Space. We enjoyed making our own space rockets from junk art. It was lots of fun to get creative. Pancake Tuesday was celebrated this month. As a class we completed procedural writing on how to make a pancake. We got to make and eat delicious pancakes. To help us learn about the toy shop in Irish we got to bring in one of our favourite toys from home. This helped build up our vocabulary about toys in Irish. We talked about showing love and appreciation to our families. We showed them this through making them a lovely Valentine’s card.

January 2018
In January Senior Infants and First class had lots of fun in school. We were outside exploring for maths where we did lots of work on length. First class were using metres to measure. In Science we were learning about forces and magnetism. We made some fridge magnets and a game of go fish. We celebrated Grandparents Day. Our grandparents are very special to us. We wrote pieces on why we love them and interviewed them to give us an idea of what games they played when they were young. We are delighted to welcome Spring. We listened to the story of St. Brigid and made St. Brigid’s crosses from rushes. Every day we are busy joining in with the 10@10. We love doing the exercises!

December 2017
What a busy month for us in school as we explored the theme of Christmas and winter. We had lots of fun in school. We really enjoyed practicing for our play ‘Whoops-a-daisy-angel’ which we performed brilliantly. In Irish we learned lots of new vocabulary about Christmas. We played fun games with this vocabulary. We explored the five senses in relation to Christmas thinking about what we smell, see, hear, touch and taste on Christmas day. In Aistear we had great fun in the Clothes and toy shop. The children made new buildings to use as shops, designed new toys for Christmas, found toys in the sand, worked in the clothes shop and played shop with the small figures. In Religion we looked at the story of Christmas. We really liked relating our parts from the Christmas play to the story. We spoke about Christmas in other countries and found out some excellent information from our relatives at home. The whole school went on a lovely walk to Huntington castle before we finished for our holidays. We had great fun singing and chatting to our friends on the way. On our last day before the holidays Santa came to visit.

October 2017
This month we have been exploring the themes of autumn, houses and homes and Halloween. We went on an autumn nature walk and looked for signs of autumn. Then we made apple crumble so that we could use some of the fruits of autumn. The apple crumble and ice cream was delicious! We learnt about trees and how we can name a tree by its fruit and leaves. We learnt about the importance of trees in the environment and how we can help save trees by recycling and reusing paper. We built our own forest habitats and explored how so many creatures depend on trees. Every day we drop everything and go outside and run our laps as we are an active school and exercise is so important.

When we were learning about houses and homes we looked at all the different types of houses in our village and we visited the Weavers Cottages to learn about houses long ago. Phil and Geraldine were great and made us feel so welcome. Phil told us lots of things about houses in the past in Ireland. In Aistear we built houses using different materials, we role played being in the home and we wrote about our houses. Halloween was great fun as we all got to dress up and walk to the castle. We are very grateful to Herbert and Esmonde’s parents for bringing us into the castle and letting us play in their front garden. It was also great fun going out to the school garden and picking our own pumpkins and carving them. On our last day before mid-term we played traditional Halloween games to help us learn about Halloween traditions.

September 2017
September just flew by as we explored the theme Myself. We talked about past and present and brought in some items to show the class from our past. Then we completed projects about ourselves (past and present) and told My Story to the class. This was really good for developing oral language and confidence. As September is also known as a harvest month we went outside and harvested the vegetables and the apples from the school garden. We made lovely homemade soup from the vegetables and flapjacks for desert. We made sock puppets and used them in a puppet show in Irish to talk about ourselves- Mé Féin. We also made models of ourselves using marla and we are very proud of our masterpieces. Our senses are very important for keeping us safe and we had great fun exploring what it would be like without our senses. Using our handprints we made a belonging tree for our classroom and it reminds us how we all belong together and each one of us is a special person in our class.
